There is always an alternative.
David Carradine (1936 - 2009)
Nothing is without alternative. This applies to seemingly hopeless situations as well as to common explanations. If you are impatiently stuck in a traffic jam on the highway, you could park your car on the side of the road and walk to the nearest farm to call a taxi. Instead of believing that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west every day, the path of the sun in the sky can be explained by the rotation of the earth.
In order to break out of our habits of thinking and acting, it is helpful to occasionally remind ourselves that there is always an alternative. Unfortunately, we often don't realize it ourselves. That's why one of the tasks of a good consultant is to break down habits of thinking, to point out alternative approaches and to evaluate the pros and cons of the different approaches. With a little distance from yourself, you can also be your own counselor: Question thought patterns, consciously look for alternatives, don't do or believe the first thing that comes to mind, but develop several alternatives and weigh them up soberly. If you take this advice to heart, you will often reach your goal better.
